The
Ego Street Scooter is sold in the UK by Firebox and
Northwest
Scooters. A somewhat lower powered model is also available
from UK Eco Scooters. They are manufactured in China, where
electric scooters are hugely popular, by a company called Ningbo
Saiting.
These
vehicles are advertised as capable of speeds up to 30 miles per hour.
However many owners have tested their scooter using GPS
technology and found that the EGO speedometer reads a little on the
optimistic side. The results have shown speedos that read
between
7 and 20 percent over true speed. This gives a more realistic
top
speed of about 25 to 27 mph. While this can be fine when
riding in slow moving city centre traffic it can be a danger while
riding in free flowing traffic even in 30 mph zones.
Over
the last three months we
have been investigating and experimenting
to find solutions to these problems.
There are several problems to be overcome before the Scoota can be run at a higher voltage to give more speed; these include the battery lights reading incorrectly and the DC converter (the part that runs the 12 volt lighting circuit) not working, These problems have now been solved. The DC converter solution alone will save you £40 compared to the price of the cheapest replacement unit we can find. Our upgrade guide is now available. See our home page for details. |
